Recreation & Culture

Many sport, recreational and cultural facilities are available in Southey.  Southey is a very active town whose teams boast many provincial championships.  Please click on any of the following topics to see what Southey has to offer:

Southey Sports Arena

The Sports Arena Complex has a very busy and comprehensive program with figure and power skating, and hockey operating at all levels in a new fully modern facility.  The arena’s concrete floor allows for trade shows, Octoberfests, car shows, in-line skating, and other large gatherings.

Southey Curling Club

The Curling Club has an active program for all ages mixed, seniors.  ladies, men's, junior and senior school programs in an excellent 3 sheet facility.  The facility features an upstairs waiting room with an excellent viewing area and downstairs club room, all of which, along with the ice surface, can be rented.
 

Southey Sports grounds

The re-designed softball and baseball diamonds are home to minor ball, slow-pitch, fastball and baseball during the summer months.
 

Robert Southey School

The Southey School has an adult badminton program as well as a recreation night.

 
Southey and District Museum

The museum features many donated artifacts from the early 1900’s, old photos and maps and a collection of Indian hammers.  One area of the museum is set up as a series of rooms all in time period decoration.  There is also a display dedicated to war veterans with Legion flags and mannequins showing uniforms worn by the armed forces.

One special attraction is the restored first Southey school with benches, desks, and presided over by the ever present teacher.  Machinery on display includes a separator, breaking plows, and many others. Of special interest are the first rotary rock picker and self propelled rock picker built by Pete Anderson in Southey.

This museum is a great tribute to the early pioneers of the area.

Murals

A "WAR MEMORIAL" mural on the south side of the Southey Drug Store commemorates local residents who served in both World Wars to secure the right of freedom for future generations.


 

The Southey Library #16 is a branch of Parkland Regional Library in Yorkton.  Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1-6 p.m. and Wednesday evenings 7-9 p.m.  Book services include new paperbacks available every two months and the latest hardcover releases can be requested.  Story-hour for pre-schoolers operates from September to May.  Internet privileges are available during hours of operation by appointment.

Memorial Hall

The Southey Memorial Hall is operated by the Town of Southey and features a hardwood dance floor, kitchen facilities and upstairs and downstairs available for rental.  Contact Town of Southey (726-2202).

 


 

Cable Company

The Southey Cable Company is owned and operated by the Town of Southey under the guidance of the Southey Cable Committee. 

There is one basic package available to all for the low monthly price of $28.00.

Lions Park

The Lions Park at the west end of town has camping space available plus a play area and playground equipment.


 
Senior Citizens Club

The Southey Senior Citizens Club located on main street offers recreational pursuits and outings.  Southey has a very active seniors community

Carlton Trail Regional College has a campus in Southey which offers:

  • educational programming including credit and non-credit programs (everything from SIAST programs such as Office Education, Youth Care Worker, Continuing Care Assistant certificate programs to business, industry and community interest classes such as agriculture classes, computer classes, First Aid/CPR classes, craft classes, etc.)
     
  • educational services such as exam invigilation, G.E.D. testing
     
  • career counseling for adults

The college can provide academic upgrading, literacy skill improvement and GED examinations.

Carlton Trail College offers workplace development courses in job start, future skills, business and computers and skill development in trades, agriculture and health and community services.

They also deliver full-time SIAST credit programs and University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina credit courses.
